What happened

A police operation in southeast Austin escalated into a SWAT response Monday night after officers located a person they were seeking on multiple felony warrants and the person refused to come out of an apartment, authorities said.

The incident began around 7:30 p.m. when officers were attempting to locate an individual wanted on three felony warrants. Police found the person at the Douglas Landing Apartments on Douglas Street, near East Oltorf Street and Pleasant Valley Road. Authorities said the suspect ran into an apartment and would not exit, prompting a call for SWAT support at approximately 9:23 p.m.

Police said the standoff ended shortly before 11 p.m., when the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. The person was booked into the Travis County Jail.

Evacuations and medical checks

Authorities said several other people were inside the apartment with the suspect. Those individuals were removed during the operation, and multiple nearby apartments were evacuated as a precaution.

Emergency medical personnel evaluated six people at the scene. Police reported no injuries.

Road impacts and interagency assistance

The response also affected traffic in the surrounding area as officers worked to secure the scene. Police said troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety assisted by helping block roads during the operation.

Police described the DPS assistance as significant during the incident, particularly for perimeter control and road closures.

What remains unknown

Authorities did not release details about the underlying warrants beyond describing them as three felonies. Police also did not provide additional information about the suspect’s identity or the specific charges tied to the warrants.

How SWAT call-outs typically unfold

SWAT call-outs are generally used when officers face heightened risk or an individual has barricaded themselves and refuses to comply with orders to exit. In such situations, police often prioritize containment, removal of bystanders, and negotiated surrender to reduce the likelihood of injuries.

  • The first operational priority is typically establishing a secure perimeter.

  • Evacuations may be used to reduce risk to neighbors and potential hostages.

  • Medical personnel may stage nearby to evaluate residents and responders.

What to expect next

After an arrest in a warrant-related standoff, the next steps usually include booking, an initial court appearance, and potential additional charges tied to resisting or evading arrest, if prosecutors determine they apply. Police have not announced whether additional charges are anticipated in this case.
