A Refreshing Turn for the Capital City

Austin residents are waking up to a significantly crisper atmosphere this Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Following the passage of a weak cold front that swept across Central Texas yesterday afternoon, the humidity has dropped, leaving the city with a classic winter-in-Texas feel. While the sun will be out in full force today, the lingering effects of the front mean that layers will be essential for anyone heading out the door.

Morning: A Chilly, Clear Start

The early morning hours began with a sharp bite in the air as temperatures hovered in the low 40s. For those commuting early, the National Weather Service reported that the heavy cloud cover from earlier in the week has largely dissipated, leaving behind clear, blue skies. Lows across the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and the I-35 corridor were recorded near 44 degrees just before dawn. Light northerly breezes are already beginning to pick up, making the actual air temperature feel a few degrees cooler.

Afternoon: Sunny and Seasonable

As we move into the afternoon, Austin will see plenty of sunshine, which will help push temperatures toward a comfortable high of approximately 66 degrees. This is considered seasonably cool for early February, providing a welcome break from the more volatile temperature swings seen in late January. Despite the bright conditions, the day will not be entirely still. Meteorologists are tracking a shift in wind patterns that will keep the air moving throughout the day. It is a perfect afternoon for outdoor activities, provided you have a light jacket on hand for when you step into the shade.

Evening: The Deep Chill Returns

The real story of the day begins after sunset. As the sun goes down, temperatures are expected to plummet rapidly. Forecasters indicate that the mercury could drop to as low as 37 degrees by late tonight. This significant cooling trend will be exacerbated by strengthening wind gusts. Northerly winds are expected to intensify after dark, with gusts potentially reaching up to 35 mph in some parts of Travis County. If you have plans to be out in the downtown area or near the lake tonight, be prepared for a much colder environment than what we experienced during the day.

No Rain, Just Wind

While the cold front has brought a change in temperature, it has not brought much in the way of moisture. The chance of precipitation remains at a negligible 5% or less for the remainder of the day. There are currently no active rain or snow warnings for the Austin area. However, the primary concern remains the wind. Residents are encouraged to secure lightweight outdoor furniture or decorations that could be displaced by the 35 mph gusts expected tonight. Looking ahead, this cool-down is expected to be short-lived, with a gradual warming trend predicted as we approach the weekend.
