Southwest Airlines prepares to open and celebrate a new Austin airport crew base in March 2026

A new operating hub for pilots and flight attendants
Southwest Airlines is moving ahead with plans to open a new crew base at Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) in early March 2026, a major operational step that would place pilots and flight attendants who currently commute to start trips in other cities directly in Austin. The company has said the base is expected to begin operations with roughly 335 pilots and 650 flight attendants, expanding to about 2,000 total employees by mid-2027.
In airline operations, a “crew base” functions as the home station where flight crews are assigned schedules, begin and end multi-day trips, and receive ongoing support from base leadership and administrative teams. Establishing a base can improve flexibility in staffing and, depending on network needs, may reduce repositioning and commuting requirements for crews.
Training and support functions planned alongside the base
Beyond staffing, Southwest has also outlined plans to add a recurring flight attendant training facility in Austin as part of a broader transformation effort. Airport officials have also described additional operational components tied to the expansion, including a station command center and support roles that typically accompany a larger crew footprint.
The company has characterized Austin as a key growth market, reporting more than 130 peak-day departures from AUS and about 6.7 million customers served in 2024. Southwest has also stated that new nonstop service from Austin to Fort Myers (Florida), Palm Springs (California) and Steamboat Springs/Hayden (Colorado) is scheduled to begin in March 2026, bringing its total nonstop destinations from AUS to 53. Separately, daily service between Austin and Cincinnati is scheduled to begin in June 2026.
Public incentives and workforce-related conditions
The expansion follows agreements and incentive commitments involving both state and local government. State officials have announced a $14 million investment to support the project through the Texas Enterprise Fund, tied to hiring commitments that include dedicating funding toward veteran recruitment. City documents and public statements around the local agreement have described a performance-based structure that links incentives to Austin-based hires meeting specified requirements, as well as a mechanism requiring a portion of the award to be returned to a city childcare assistance reserve fund.
Public records and city communications have also indicated that the new roles are expected to be high-paying on average, reflecting the seniority and compensation typical of airline pilot and flight attendant positions, particularly for captains.
What the celebration signals for AUS and the regional air travel market
Southwest has indicated it intends to mark the new base with a celebratory event at the airport, framing the opening as a milestone in its long-term Austin presence. For AUS, the move strengthens the airport’s status as a major operating location rather than only a destination station, with implications for recruiting pipelines, training infrastructure, and the daily rhythm of airport operations.
- Startup staffing: approximately 985 flight crew members (pilots and flight attendants combined) in early March 2026.
- Planned expansion: about 2,000 total employees by mid-2027, including leadership and support functions.
- Network context: March 2026 route additions and a June 2026 new daily city-pair, alongside existing high-frequency departures.
With the base launch planned for early March 2026, Southwest’s Austin strategy shifts from serving a fast-growing market to embedding more of its workforce and training activity directly at AUS.
