Public Notice: Winter Weather Service Changes and Health Advisories

Parks and Recreation Winterization and Closures
The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department has announced that winterization of park facilities will begin today, Friday, January 23, 2026. This process includes the closure of restrooms and water fountains across city parks, starting with outlying locations and moving toward the city center. Residents should be aware that Emma Long Metropolitan Park camping is closed effective today through at least Tuesday, January 27, due to the suspension of water services.
Additionally, all athletic league games and facility rentals are canceled starting Friday evening through Sunday, January 25, in anticipation of forecasted winter weather. Maintenance crews will begin shutting off water at athletic complexes, including Krieg Field, this afternoon. Zilker Botanical Garden will also remain closed through the weekend, with a scheduled reopening on Monday, January 26, weather permitting.
Public Health Advisory: Screwworm Awareness and Flu Surge
Austin Public Health and the CDC have issued a heightened advisory regarding New World screwworm following reports of the parasitic larva in Tamaulipas, Mexico, near the Texas border. While no cases have been identified in the United States as of January 23, health officials urge the public to keep open wounds covered and to seek medical attention for any suspected infections. Residents are advised not to attempt to remove any larvae themselves, as this can facilitate the spread of the pest.
Concurrently, health officials report a significant surge in seasonal flu cases across the Austin area. Transmission rates are expected to remain high for several weeks. Parents are encouraged to be especially vigilant, as pediatric cases have risen sharply following recent holiday travel.
Transportation and Infrastructure Updates
CapMetro reminds commuters that the January 2026 service changes are now in effect. Notable adjustments include the realignment of Route 485 Night Owl Cameron to improve late-night connectivity for the East 6th Street entertainment district and the Eastside Bus Plaza. Additionally, Route 935 Tech Ridge Express has been shifted from IH-35 to MoPac to mitigate delays caused by ongoing highway construction. In response to regional environmental conditions, the U.S. Drought Monitor has placed the Austin area under Extreme Drought (D3) status as of January 22. The city maintains a La Niña advisory, with dry conditions expected to persist through the remainder of the winter season.
City Council Legislative Summary
Following the regular meeting on January 22, the Austin City Council has authorized several new interlocal agreements. These include a three-month extension of animal services provisions for Travis County and a new partnership with the Austin Independent School District to provide on-site fire marshal services for new construction and maintenance projects. The Council also issued a formal proclamation recognizing Muslim American Heritage Month and designated January 22 as Ryan Holiday Day in honor of local cultural contributions.
