Official Public Notice: City Service Updates and Mobility Alerts

Effective Sunday, February 8, 2026, the City of Austin is issuing the following roundup of public service announcements, infrastructure milestones, and health advisories. Residents are encouraged to review these updates to stay informed on local governance and mobility changes affecting the greater Austin area as we begin a new week.

Infrastructure & Mobility: Wishbone Bridge Now Open

The City is proud to announce that as of Saturday, February 7, the Wishbone Bridge and Unity Underpass are officially open to the public. This major $25 million pedestrian and bicycle crossing over Lady Bird Lake near the Longhorn Dam is designed to provide a safer connection for residents and visitors alike. The project completes a vital 10-mile loop of the Anne and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, significantly enhancing connectivity between East Austin and the city center.

  • I-35 Frontage Road Closure: Beginning tomorrow, Monday, February 9, the Texas Department of Transportation will implement a long-term closure of the northbound I-35 frontage road north of Riverside Drive. This closure is expected to remain in effect through 2029 as crews construct a new east pedestrian bridge. Motorists are advised to utilize the newly opened Riverside Drive bypass lane.
  • 183 North Project: Final cleanup operations and toll-lane integration continue as the project nears completion this month. Travelers should expect minor lane shifts between MoPac and State Highway 45 as contractors finalize the new direct connector ramps.

Health & Public Safety Advisories

Wildfire Preparedness: The Texas A&M Forest Service has maintained a Level 2 Preparedness status for the region as of February 6, 2026. While the local forecast indicates a warm start to the week, the potential for wildfire activity remains present. Residents are urged to adhere to all local burn bans and exercise caution with outdoor equipment.

Public Health Notice: Austin Public Health is monitoring a recent federal recall involving approximately 46,315 pounds of frozen, raw pork boneless loins. The affected products were imported without proper reinspection. Consumers are encouraged to check their residential freezers for any matching products and follow standard disposal or return procedures to ensure food safety.

Civic Engagement and Council Updates

The Austin City Council concluded its most recent regular meeting on February 5. Key authorizations included new contracts for mobile security monitoring in parkland areas and maintenance for Austin Energy storm water ponds. The next City Council Regular Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 19, 2026, at Austin City Hall.

  • Social Services Review: The Public Health Committee recently conducted a comprehensive review of the City’s social services portfolio and the Homeless Strategies strategic plan for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.
  • Public Participation: Residents wishing to speak at upcoming sessions can access the 2026 General Public Communication sign-up schedule through the City Clerk’s portal.
