Significant Changes to I-35 in Downtown Austin

Starting today, Sunday, February 1, 2026, motorists traveling through the downtown corridor face permanent changes to the I-35 landscape. As part of the ongoing I-35 Capital Express Central project, the Texas Department of Transportation has officially shuttered two major access points. The northbound I-35 Riverside Drive exit (Exit 233) and the Holly Street entrance and exit ramps (Exit 234A) are now permanently closed to traffic. These closures are necessary for the reconstruction of the Lady Bird Lake bridge and the long-term expansion of the interstate.

Drivers who typically use these ramps should expect significant shifts in traffic patterns. TxDOT recommends utilizing the Cesar Chavez Street or Woodland Avenue exits as alternatives. Additionally, the south-to-north U-turn beneath the Lady Bird Lake bridge remains closed nightly through mid-February following delays caused by last week's winter storm. Work on the new northbound I-35 bypass lane continues, with an expected completion date in mid-2026.

Major Project Milestones: 183 North and Loop 360

The first weekend of February brings better news for North Austin commuters. The 183 North Project is nearing its final stages. While the new northbound toll lanes between MoPac and SH 45 opened earlier in January, crews are currently finishing the direct connectors and southbound toll segments. The entire project remains on track to wrap up later this month, which will significantly improve transit times for those traveling between Cedar Park and North Austin.

Meanwhile, work on the Loop 360 project at Westlake Drive and Cedar Street is progressing. Current construction involves sinking the main lanes of 360 to remove the need for traffic lights at those intersections. While this work is slated for completion in mid-2026, drivers are advised to remain alert for lane shifts near the Courtyard Drive and RM 2222 intersections as preparation for the next phase begins.

Public Transport and Winter Storm Recovery

Following the icy conditions that impacted the region late last week, Austin is still in recovery mode. The City of Austin has extended the operation of its cold weather shelters through tonight, Sunday, February 1. CapMetro has resumed most services, but riders should expect some minor delays as the agency adjusts back to full schedules after previous weather-related suspensions. One Texas Center serves as the primary intake location for those requiring transit to shelters.

Local Event Alert: South Congress Congestion

Expect localized traffic delays on South Congress Avenue today for the 19th Annual Jo’s Chili Cook-Off. With live music and free entry drawing large crowds to the South Congress area, street parking will be extremely limited. Commuters are encouraged to use public transit or ride-share services to avoid congestion in the 1300 block of South Congress.
