Official Public Notice: Recovery Operations and Municipal Meetings for Wednesday, January 28

Emergency Operations and Disaster Declaration
Following a significant winter storm event that impacted Central Texas over the past week, the City of Austin continues to operate under recovery protocols. A local disaster declaration signed by Mayor Kirk Watson remains in effect to facilitate resource coordination and damage assessment. While the National Weather Service Extreme Cold Warning has expired, the Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations Center remains active to monitor regional recovery. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant as the thaw continues, specifically monitoring home plumbing for leaks that may become apparent as pipes reach normal temperatures.
Water and Parks Infrastructure Restoration
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department has announced that the reactivation of water amenities at municipal parks is scheduled to conclude today, Wednesday, January 28. Crews have been working since Tuesday afternoon to de-winterize facilities, including park restrooms and water fountains. Residents should be aware that some facilities may remain closed until final safety inspections are completed by departmental staff later this evening. All year-round municipal pools and Golf ATX courses are currently undergoing similar de-winterization procedures, with specific opening times to be announced individually by each facility.
Municipal Board and Committee Meetings
Official municipal business resumes with the following scheduled public meetings at Austin City Hall:
- Climate, Water, Environment, and Parks Committee: A public meeting is scheduled for 9:30 AM in the City Hall Council Chambers. The committee is slated to discuss environmental policy and receive updates on departmental responses to recent weather-related utility impacts.
- Building and Standards Commission: A regular meeting of the commission is scheduled for today. The agenda includes the review of various property maintenance cases and building code compliance reports.
Resource Recovery and Collection Services
Austin Resource Recovery confirms that a one-day delay remains in place for all curbside trash, recycling, and composting collections this week due to previous hazardous road conditions. Collections originally scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, will now be performed on Thursday, January 29. Residents are advised to keep their carts at the curb until they have been serviced. On-demand bulk, brush, and household hazardous waste appointments are also affected by this 24-hour shift in the service schedule.
Austin ISD Public Information Sessions
The Austin Independent School District is proceeding with scheduled public sessions today as part of the "Family Empower Hour" series. Two sessions titled "Child Find" are scheduled for 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Additionally, the district will host an information session for newly identified Gifted and Talented families at 6:00 PM.
