Official City Notice: Winter Weather Emergency and Public Health Advisories

Emergency Operations: Winter Storm Recovery and Safety
The City of Austin and Travis County remain under a disaster declaration following a severe winter storm that impacted the Central Texas region over the weekend. An Extreme Cold Warning is officially in effect through noon today, Monday, January 26, 2026. The Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations Center is currently active and coordinating response efforts to ensure public safety and infrastructure stability. Residents are strongly advised to limit all unnecessary travel as road conditions across the city remain hazardous due to ice patches and freezing rain impacts on bridges and overpasses.
Warming Center Availability and Public Services
To assist residents facing power outages or lack of heat, the city has activated the following warming centers, which will remain open through Tuesday morning:
- Central Library: 710 W. Cesar Chavez St.
- Terrazas Branch Library: 1105 E. Cesar Chavez St.
- Little Walnut Creek Branch Library: 835 W. Rundberg Ln.
Individuals requiring transportation to these facilities should contact 3-1-1 for assistance. Due to the extreme weather, all Austin ISD schools and offices are closed today. The University of Texas at Austin campus also remains closed, with all classes and events canceled for the duration of the day.
Public Health Advisory: Screwworm Monitoring
Austin Public Health, in alignment with a nationwide health advisory from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is urging residents and local healthcare providers to remain vigilant regarding the New World Screwworm. While no cases have been confirmed within Travis County, the parasitic larva has been identified near the Texas-Mexico border. Residents are advised to keep open wounds covered, use insect repellent, and report any unusual parasitic activity in domestic animals or livestock to a veterinarian immediately.
