Austin Traffic and Transit Update: Wednesday, January 21, 2026

Austin commuters should prepare for a mix of active road hazards and ongoing construction delays this Wednesday morning. While the early morning rush began with relatively clear conditions on several major highways, localized incidents and significant long-term infrastructure projects continue to impact travel times across the metropolitan area.

Active Hazards and Incidents

Early morning data from the Austin-Travis County Traffic Report indicates a traffic hazard on the North SH 130 Northbound Frontage Road. Debris was reported near the intersection of Citizen Way and the SH 130 service road. While crews have been working to clear the area, drivers utilizing the SH 130 corridor should remain alert and exercise caution when approaching the service road transitions to avoid unexpected lane obstructions.

I-35 Capital Express Project Impacts

The I-35 Capital Express project remains the primary source of ongoing congestion in the central corridor. Construction activity is currently heavy near the University of Texas campus and the downtown district. Commuters are reminded that nightly closures of the northbound lower deck between 12th and 32nd Streets are part of the current work phase. Additionally, southbound drivers should expect alternating lane closures on both the upper and lower decks between Airport Boulevard and MLK Boulevard during the late evening and early morning hours. While these lanes are typically reopened by the 5:00 AM rush, residual slowing and lane shifts remain a daily factor for those traveling through the heart of the city.

CapMetro Service Changes and Detours

Public transit riders should be mindful of several service adjustments and construction-related detours currently in effect. Important updates for this week include:

  • Route 935 Tech Ridge Express: This route has been officially realigned from I-35 to MoPac (Loop 1) to proactively bypass heavy construction zones and improve reliability for North Austin commuters.
  • Riverside Area Detours: Construction at Wickersham and Riverside Drive is currently causing route diversions that are expected to remain in place through early February.
  • Westgate Waterline Project: Ongoing infrastructure work on Westgate Boulevard continues to require bus detours, which are scheduled to last through the end of January.
  • Lady Bird Lake Waterline Work: Minor adjustments for routes near the lakefront will continue through January 23.

Weekend Weather Advisory

Looking toward the end of the week, local officials and Austin Energy have issued a heads-up regarding a forecasted arctic cold snap. While the Texas power grid is currently expected to meet demand, there is a possibility of winter precipitation over the weekend. Commuters are encouraged to finalize any vehicle winterization today and stay tuned to updated forecasts for Friday evening and Monday morning, as ice accumulation can rapidly change road safety and transit schedules.
