Morning: A Gray Start with Rising Temperatures

Austin residents waking up this Wednesday, January 21, 2026, will find a thick blanket of clouds overhead and a noticeable rise in humidity. Early morning temperatures started in the mid-50s, holding steady at approximately 56°F through the commute hours. While the skies remain overcast, the atmosphere is heavy with a humidity level reaching nearly 82%. Winds are currently light, blowing from the south at approximately 9 mph, which is helping to pull warmer, moist air from the Gulf into Central Texas.

Although most areas will remain dry during the morning hours, early risers may have encountered isolated patches of light drizzle. This dampness is expected to linger through the mid-morning as temperatures begin their gradual climb toward the afternoon peak.

Afternoon: Peaking in the Low 70s

As we move into the afternoon, Austin will experience a brief period of unseasonable warmth. Forecasters expect the high temperature to reach approximately 71°F between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. While the cloud cover will persist for much of the day, there is a possibility for a few breaks in the overcast, allowing for brief spells of sunlight. However, the primary focus remains on the rising moisture levels. There is a 20% chance of light rain or intermittent drizzle, particularly for neighborhoods located along and east of the I-35 corridor.

Outdoor conditions will feel somewhat muggy compared to typical late-January weather in Central Texas. The southerly winds will maintain a steady pace of 9 to 10 mph, keeping the air moving as the city prepares for a significant shift in the weather pattern later this week.

Evening and Overnight: Cooling Down Ahead of a Major Shift

By early evening, temperatures will begin to retreat from their afternoon highs, dipping back into the low 60s by 8:00 PM and eventually settling near an overnight low of 52°F. Skies will remain mostly cloudy through the night, with the high humidity levels maintaining a damp feel to the air. While tonight's conditions are relatively calm, they serve as the final mild period before a powerful arctic front makes its presence known.

Weather Alert: Prepare for the Weekend Freeze

While today remains mild, the National Weather Service and local meteorologists have issued a Weather Impact Alert for the upcoming weekend. A massive arctic airmass is expected to arrive late Friday, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and a high probability of freezing rain and sleet. Forecasters anticipate that temperatures may stay below freezing for up to 48 hours starting Saturday. Residents are encouraged to use today’s mild weather to prepare their homes, protect outdoor pipes, and ensure they have adequate supplies before the wintry conditions arrive.
