Long lines at Austin-Bergstrom on Sunday highlight spring travel surge and security checkpoint changes

What travelers encountered Sunday morning
Long queues formed Sunday morning at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), as early departures and seasonal travel combined to increase demand at ticket counters and security screening. The buildup is consistent with a pattern airport officials have described for March travel, when passenger volumes rise around spring break trips and major festivals.
Why Sundays can become a bottleneck at AUS
Airport operations concentrate many departures into a relatively narrow morning window. Security screening at the Barbara Jordan Terminal typically begins around 3:00 a.m., while the first wave of domestic flights commonly departs a few hours later. When large numbers of passengers arrive within the same hour—often tied to 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. departures—lines can lengthen quickly even if screening lanes are fully staffed and moving steadily.
In a March 10, 2026 travel advisory, city airport officials said they are planning for elevated demand from Thursday, March 12 through the end of March, with several days expected to exceed 30,000 departing passengers. The advisory also listed projected peak days later in the month and into early April.
Security checkpoints: four entry points, different screening types
AUS has been transitioning to a four-checkpoint configuration inside the Barbara Jordan Terminal. The airport has described the checkpoints as follows:
- Checkpoints 1 and 4 serve general screening, with Checkpoint 4 located on the far west side of the terminal and positioned to improve access toward gates in the 20s and above.
- Checkpoints 2 and 3 are configured for TSA PreCheck, with Checkpoint 3 also supporting CLEAR for eligible travelers.
All checkpoints lead to the same secure-side gate areas, meaning travelers can use any open checkpoint and still reach any gate once past screening. Airport signage and staff direction can affect which lines move fastest at a given moment.
South Terminal changes add another planning variable
Travel planning is also being shaped by an upcoming terminal shift. The South Terminal is scheduled to remain operational through March 31, 2026, after which Allegiant and Frontier flights are set to relocate to the Barbara Jordan Terminal on April 1, 2026. Airport officials have framed the move as part of broader airfield and expansion work.
What airport guidance says to do during peak periods
Airport guidance for the March travel period recommends arriving about 2.5 hours before domestic departures and about 3 hours before international departures, with additional time for checked bags, rental-car returns and peak festival days.
For travelers facing heavy Sunday-morning traffic, the practical impact is that time spent outside security—curb congestion, parking availability, and airline bag-drop lines—can be as consequential as the checkpoint itself.
