A longtime South First Street restaurant sets a final service date

Little Mexico Restaurant, a long-running Tex-Mex fixture on South First Street near Oltorf Street, is scheduled to close on February 28, ending what has been described as a nearly 40-year presence in South Austin. The business announced the shutdown publicly in a farewell message, tying the decision to the retirement of owner Rosa Elia Martinez.

The closure date gives customers several weeks for final visits and for longstanding routines—weekend breakfasts and seasonal tamale orders among them—before the restaurant ends service.

Owner retirement and a family business nearing four decades

The restaurant’s public message frames the decision as the conclusion of a multidecade, family-run operation. In family comments shared alongside the announcement, relatives characterized the restaurant as Martinez’s life’s work and highlighted the role the business played for the family over time. Those statements also emphasized the longevity of the staff and the day-to-day labor involved in operating an independent restaurant for decades.

What Little Mexico has been known for

Little Mexico built a following around a straightforward Tex-Mex menu and a consistent service pattern that, over time, became familiar to generations of nearby residents. Publicly posted materials and community listings have associated the restaurant with breakfast offerings and house-made staples, including migas, breakfast plates, tacos, and tamales.

Entertainment was also part of the restaurant’s identity, particularly on Friday nights, when live music and roaming mariachis were frequently promoted. In later years, the restaurant advertised scheduled performances and occasional DJ nights with a cover charge.

  • Final day of service: February 28
  • Location: South First Street near Oltorf Street, South Austin
  • Reason cited for closure: Owner retirement

A changing corridor for legacy restaurants

Little Mexico’s exit comes amid continuing turnover along South First Street and nearby South Austin corridors, where established businesses have faced rising costs, redevelopment pressure, and shifting customer patterns. In recent years, multiple longtime Austin restaurants have closed or consolidated, reflecting broader changes in how older commercial spaces are being used and who can continue operating in them.

Along the same South First corridor, another decades-old Tex-Mex restaurant, El Mercado (1302 S. First St.), ended its run in December 2025 after operating since 1985, and the space is slated to reopen under new management as another concept.

Little Mexico’s closure marks the end of a multidecade, family-run operation that remained in place as the surrounding neighborhood changed.

What happens next

No future plans for the Little Mexico site were included with the closing announcement. For now, the restaurant has set a defined endpoint: February 28. Until then, it remains open for service as it winds down operations and says goodbye to customers who made it a regular stop in South Austin.
