Austin musicians land on a national stage

Huston-Tillotson University’s jazz program has drawn national attention through invitations tied to Jazz at Lincoln Center, positioning student musicians from the East Austin campus among a small group of U.S. collegiate ensembles recognized for competitive performance.

The university’s Jazz Orchestra has been selected as one of 10 ensembles nationwide to compete in the 2026 National Collegiate Jazz Championship, scheduled for Jan. 17–18, 2026 at Frederick P. Rose Hall, the performance venue inside Jazz at Lincoln Center’s complex in New York City. The event includes big band and combo rounds, along with mentoring opportunities led by musicians associated with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s orchestra.

How the Lincoln Center honors fit together

For Huston-Tillotson, the championship invitation follows other recent national-stage appearances connected to Jazz at Lincoln Center. In April 2025, the Huston-Tillotson Jazz Orchestra placed among top performers at a national gathering of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in Norfolk, Virginia—an outcome that led to the group being chosen as one of two ensembles to open for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Separately, the Huston-Tillotson Jazz Collective has also been involved in a Jazz at Lincoln Center residency format that includes master classes, workshops, jam sessions and direct coaching from members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, culminating in a concert program featuring the student ensemble and the professional orchestra.

National Collegiate Jazz Championship: a selective field that includes two Austin programs

The 2026 National Collegiate Jazz Championship roster includes programs from Eastman School of Music, Michigan State University, North Carolina Central University, Northwestern University, The Ohio State University, Temple University, the University of Central Florida, the University of South Carolina, the University of Texas at Austin, and Huston-Tillotson University.

Huston-Tillotson’s music leadership has described the championship selection as a rare opportunity for undergraduates to perform within a high-profile educational framework while representing an HBCU jazz tradition on a major national platform.

Local momentum: Austin performances and institutional milestone

The national recognition arrives as the university marks its 150th anniversary, a milestone frequently highlighted alongside the jazz program’s growing public profile in Austin. The Huston-Tillotson Jazz Collective has also built visibility through repeated bookings at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, where it has performed in multiple consecutive years.

With Lincoln Center invitations spanning competitive selection, coaching-centered residencies and high-profile performances, Huston-Tillotson’s jazz musicians are increasingly appearing in national settings that combine artistry, evaluation and education.

In the near term, the New York championship weekend will serve as the program’s next major test—one that places student musicians in the same competitive field as some of the country’s most established university jazz departments.
