Community Update: Barton Springs Maintenance and Infrastructure Advisories

Barton Springs Pool Annual Maintenance Closure
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department reminds residents that Barton Springs Pool is currently closed for its scheduled annual spring cleaning and critical infrastructure maintenance. This closure, which began earlier this week, is slated to continue through Friday, March 13, 2026. Engineering crews are focused on replacing 1940s-era piping to mitigate future flood risks and protecting the critical habitat of the endangered Barton Springs salamander. The pool is expected to reopen to the public for the start of the paid season on March 14. During this period, swimmers are encouraged to utilize other year-round facilities, though Barton Springs remains closed to all entry.
City Council Session Recap and Policy Updates
Following the regular meeting held on Thursday, February 26, the City of Austin has updated several project statuses and community service agreements. Notable actions from the session include the authorization of an amendment to the Austin-Travis County Sobriety Center agreement to increase clinical oversight funding. Additionally, Council members moved forward with a one-time funding increase for the Community Development Block Grant Teen Parent Child Care Program. Residents should also note the progress of a proposed noise ordinance targeting excessively loud vehicle engine noise; the current draft suggests an 85-decibel limit and includes considerations for time of day and proximity to residential zones.
Transportation and Trail Alerts
- I-35 Pedestrian Bridge: The pedestrian bridge over I-35 is now closed to facilitate work on the TxDOT Capital Express project. Trail users are advised that they will not be able to cross between the north and south shores on the east side of I-35. The City recommends using the South Congress Avenue bridge as the primary detour. This closure is expected to last through 2029.
- Waterloo Greenway Construction: Active construction continues on Phase II of the Waterloo Greenway, known as "The Confluence." Residents can expect increased truck traffic and noise near Waller Creek as crews install new lattice bridges and a 1,600-tree urban canopy designed to connect the downtown greenway directly to Lady Bird Lake.
Public Safety and Regional Advisories
Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS) and the Austin Fire Department are participating in "First Responder Appreciation Weekend" activities starting today, Friday, February 27, at the Circuit of The Americas. This event highlights the service of local public safety professionals and provides recruitment opportunities for those interested in municipal careers.
In regional safety news, a strict burn ban remains in effect for Bastrop State Park. Due to elevated fire risks, no wood or charcoal fires are permitted. Visitors may only use containerized fuel stoves for cooking until environmental conditions improve and the ban is officially lifted by park authorities.
