Austin Animal Center Monthly Training Closure

Austin Animal Services has announced that the Austin Animal Center will be closed to the public on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. This scheduled closure is part of the department's monthly staff training and operational planning initiative, which takes place on the second Wednesday of every month. During this time, the front lobby, intake services, and the Pet Resource Center will be unavailable to the public. However, animal care staff will remain on-site to ensure all sheltered animals receive their daily care, feeding, and medical attention. Residents who find a stray animal or have an animal-related emergency are encouraged to call 3-1-1 for guidance until the facility resumes normal operations on Thursday.

Downtown Mobility: Early SXSW Road Closures

As the city prepares for the start of the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival on Thursday, March 12, several major downtown road closures are already in effect as of Wednesday, March 11. Most notably, Congress Avenue is closed to through traffic between West 10th Street and East 7th Street. This closure began on Tuesday, March 10, and is expected to remain in place until mid-morning on March 19. Additional congestion is expected throughout the central business district as event organizers continue setting up outdoor stages and temporary venues. With the Austin Convention Center currently closed for a multi-year renovation project, residents should be aware that festival activities are more widely distributed across the downtown area this year, potentially impacting traffic patterns on streets that were previously unaffected.

Ongoing Barton Springs Pool Maintenance

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department reminds residents that Barton Springs Pool remains closed for its annual spring maintenance and the critical Skimmer Bypass Project. The pool has been closed since late February and is currently on schedule to reopen to the public on Saturday, March 21, 2026. This project is addressing long-term safety and environmental concerns by replacing aging infrastructure within the pool area. During the closure, regular swimmers are encouraged to utilize Deep Eddy Pool or other municipal aquatic facilities. While the pool itself is closed, the surrounding Zilker Park grounds remain open, though visitors should expect minor detours near the bathhouse construction zones.

Public Safety: Fire Weather Disaster Proclamation

Travis County remains under a disaster proclamation for increased fire weather conditions, which was renewed by the Office of the Governor on March 9, 2026. Local health and safety officials are urging residents to exercise extreme caution with any outdoor activities that could produce a spark. Dry conditions combined with forecasted winds have increased the risk of rapid wildfire spread in the Central Texas region. All residents are advised to monitor local weather updates and comply with any burn bans currently in effect in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Upcoming City Council Meeting

There is no City Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 11. The Council is set to convene for its next Regular Meeting on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at City Hall. The agenda for the upcoming session includes several items related to urban planning and community health grants. Public testimony for the March 12 meeting is available via both in-person and remote registration.
