Incident occurred near Johnson High School during broader Central Texas student demonstrations

Buda police are investigating a physical altercation that broke out during a student walkout in Hays Consolidated Independent School District (Hays CISD) tied to protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Hays County District Attorney’s Office has also become involved in reviewing the incident.

The walkout occurred Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, when students from Moe and Gene Johnson High School left campus and gathered near the intersection of RM 967 and FM 1626. Police reported being in the area to provide traffic and pedestrian safety as students moved along RM 967.

What police say happened

Officers were dispatched around 3 p.m. to reports of a fight at the intersection. Police said a female minor and an adult male had argued before the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation involving multiple people. Both the minor and the adult were identified during the initial response, and authorities said no immediate arrests were made as the investigation began.

Video of the incident circulated widely on social media, showing a confrontation on a grassy area near the roadway, followed by other students intervening and the adult returning to a vehicle. Police and local officials said they are collecting witness statements and reviewing available video as part of the inquiry.

District response and jurisdictional limits

Hays CISD stated the adult involved was not affiliated with the district and noted the incident took place off school property. District leaders said the district is cooperating with law enforcement while emphasizing that the investigation itself remains with police and prosecutors.

In messages to families following the walkouts, district leadership discouraged further unsanctioned departures from campus and warned that students who leave school grounds during the school day may face disciplinary consequences under district policy.

Political and law-enforcement backdrop

The Buda incident occurred amid a wider wave of student walkouts across Central Texas and elsewhere in Texas focused on immigration enforcement activity. State leaders responded publicly to the protests, with Gov. Greg Abbott criticizing the walkouts and calling for accountability measures for campuses and staff involved.

Separately, law enforcement in Kyle reported arrests of two minors during the period of area walkouts, while clarifying those arrests were not connected to the demonstrations themselves.
