Austin woman Marietta Allison killed in Houston Heights robbery; 18-year-old charged as friends mourn

Fatal shooting during reported robbery in Houston’s Heights
Austin resident Marietta Allison, 61, was shot and killed in Houston on Friday night, March 6, 2026, in what investigators have described as a robbery and carjacking in the Heights neighborhood. Authorities said Allison had traveled to Houston to support a friend undergoing cancer treatment.
Investigators said the shooting happened near the intersection of West 20th Street and Lawrence Street, close to an apartment building Allison was approaching after parking. Police have said a masked suspect confronted her, attempted to steal her purse, and fired after she resisted. Allison was struck in the neck, authorities said.
Vehicle pursuit, crash and SWAT standoff
Police said the suspect fled in Allison’s vehicle. Officers located the car roughly 45 minutes later and pursued it for about 10 miles before it crashed. After the crash, the suspect ran into an apartment complex and entered an empty unit, prompting a SWAT response and a standoff that ended when the suspect surrendered, authorities said.
In a separate account provided early in the investigation, police reported arriving to find a woman with a gunshot wound on a sidewalk; she was taken to a hospital where she later died.
Suspect charged; court proceedings and allegations outlined
Authorities identified the suspect as Darius Hall, 18, who has been charged with capital murder. Hall appeared in court on Saturday, March 7, and was ordered held without bond, prosecutors said. Court records and statements in court also described additional allegations, including tampering with evidence and evading in connection with the case.
Prosecutors told the court Hall admitted to evading police and being in the vehicle but denied involvement in the shooting itself. Prosecutors also said Hall has a juvenile criminal history and was on probation for prior offenses, including aggravated robbery, motor vehicle theft and aggravated assault.
