What police say happened

Austin police have released surveillance video and are asking for the public’s help identifying people of interest after a fatal shooting outside the Gus Garcia Recreation Center in North Austin.

Officers responded at about 12:43 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2026, to a reported shooting at the recreation center at 1201 E. Rundberg Lane. A man later identified as Jamal Elijah, born June 15, 1993, was found with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers and Austin-Travis County EMS attempted life-saving measures, but Elijah was pronounced dead at 1:07 a.m.

Police said a second adult male who was also shot was taken to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

What investigators have disclosed so far

Detectives said the investigation indicates Elijah was at the recreation center with friends when he was confronted by a group. Police say the confrontation ended with gunfire that killed Elijah. The department has not publicly identified a suspect or announced any arrests in connection with the shooting.

The newly released surveillance footage shows individuals described by investigators as people of interest. Police are asking anyone who recognizes them, or who has information about the incident, to come forward.

Where the case stands

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide under case number 26-460054. Police have characterized the investigation as active and ongoing, with crime scene specialists and homicide detectives assigned to process evidence and develop leads.

In communications to the public, police have indicated the incident was tied to a confrontation at the recreation center and have emphasized the importance of witness statements and video review in identifying those involved.
