Austin police investigate fatal overnight downtown hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian near Interstate 35

What happened
Austin police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that occurred overnight in the downtown area, involving a pedestrian and a vehicle that left the scene. The crash was reported at about 2:48 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, along the southbound Interstate 35 frontage road near the on-ramp to Sixth Street.
The pedestrian died at the scene. Police have not released the person’s identity or additional demographic details as the investigation continues.
Where the investigation stands
Austin Police Department investigators are working to determine the sequence of events, including where the pedestrian was immediately before the impact and the direction and speed of the vehicle involved. Investigators typically examine debris patterns, possible vehicle parts left behind, tire marks, roadway lighting and signage, and the availability of nearby surveillance video from private businesses and public infrastructure.
In downtown cases, law enforcement often canvasses for witnesses who were driving, walking, or using rideshare services at the time. Police have not publicly described the suspect vehicle or indicated whether any video has been recovered.
Downtown frontage roads and crash risk
The stretch of I-35 frontage roads near Sixth Street is a complex area where late-night vehicle traffic, on-ramp movements, and pedestrian activity can overlap. Frontage roads can present added risk because they function as both local streets and high-volume connectors to freeway ramps, often with frequent turning movements and changing lane patterns.
Recent traffic-fatality context
The downtown hit-and-run comes in a year when Austin has already recorded traffic deaths in January. On Jan. 18, 2026, police reported a separate fatal crash involving a pedestrian on the 8000 block of the southbound I-35 service road; in that case, the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated, and police classified it as the city’s fourth fatal crash of 2026 at that time.
Austin’s long-running traffic-safety initiative, Vision Zero, sets a goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries through a combination of safer street design, policy changes, targeted enforcement, and public engagement.
