Austin police charge Chance Barrett with 2024 Grayledge Drive homicide after digital and rideshare records review

Arrest follows nearly 20-month investigation into July 2024 killing in North Austin
Austin police have filed a first-degree murder charge against Chance Barrett, 26, in connection with the July 12, 2024 homicide of Edgar Yudiel Granados, 31, in the 8200 block of Grayledge Drive. Investigators describe Barrett as a former roommate of Granados.
Police said Barrett was arrested on an unrelated matter on Feb. 27, 2026. He was formally charged on March 2, 2026, after detectives presented additional investigative findings related to the 2024 homicide.
What investigators say happened on Grayledge Drive
The killing occurred in the early morning hours of July 12, 2024, when Granados was shot at a residence on Grayledge Drive. The case remained open while detectives assembled evidence that, according to court filings, included data drawn from digital accounts and transportation history connected to the movements of people involved.
Authorities have not publicly released a full narrative of events leading up to the shooting or described a motive. Police have also not disclosed whether they believe any additional suspects were involved.
Digital trail becomes central to the case
In the charging process, investigators relied in part on digital records that can help establish timelines and corroborate where a person was before, during, or after a crime. In this case, court documents summarized by local reporting indicate detectives reviewed rideshare activity around the time 911 was called, alongside information recovered through searches of cloud-linked accounts.
Such records are commonly used in criminal investigations because they can provide time-stamped metadata, account activity logs, and location-related details that can be compared against witness statements, surveillance video, and physical evidence collected at a scene.
Police identified Barrett as someone previously connected to the victim through shared housing.
Investigators reviewed rideshare-related receipts and timing information as part of the case timeline.
Detectives also examined cloud-account activity referenced in the court record.
Procedural posture and what comes next
Barrett’s charge is a criminal allegation and does not establish guilt. The next stages typically include initial court appearances, bond decisions, and evidentiary exchanges between prosecutors and the defense. Further details may emerge through future hearings, additional filings, or trial proceedings.
Police said the charge stems from the July 12, 2024 homicide investigation on Grayledge Drive and that Barrett was formally charged on March 2, 2026.
Austin police have not announced a trial date, and the Travis County court docket will determine scheduling for future proceedings.
