Austin Municipal Court’s warrant amnesty window outlines arrest-free options to clear unpaid citations and warrants

An arrest-free path to resolve municipal cases
Austin Municipal Court and the Downtown Austin Community Court are offering a warrant amnesty period designed to help people clear eligible cases without the risk of being taken into custody when they voluntarily appear. The program targets residents with unpaid citations and active municipal warrants, creating a limited-time window for defendants to bring cases into compliance through court-approved options.
During the amnesty period, the court waives warrant fees for individuals who resolve active warrants through the program. Court operations are structured to encourage voluntary participation: no officers are dispatched to take defendants into custody for eligible cases, and those who come in voluntarily to municipal court or community court locations are not arrested.
What the program covers—and what it does not
The amnesty program applies only to active cases handled by Austin Municipal Court or the Downtown Austin Community Court. It is not a blanket policy for all warrants across jurisdictions, and it does not automatically clear a warrant without action by the defendant. Individuals must contact the court or appear during designated dockets to access the amnesty terms.
The courts have indicated that multiple resolution pathways are available for those who cannot pay immediately, including payment plans, community service, and hardship waivers for qualifying defendants. All services connected to the amnesty walk-in dockets are provided without charge, and Spanish interpretation is available.
How to participate: walk-in dockets and locations
The program relies on walk-in dockets—sessions where judges and prosecutors are available to review cases, discuss options, and issue orders. No appointment is required during these dockets.
Main Municipal Court location: 6800 Burleson Road, Building 310, Suite 175 (Bergstrom Technology Center complex). Walk-in dockets run Monday through Friday, with an additional evening window on Thursdays.
Municipal Court substation: 2121 West Parmer Lane, Suite 116, open Monday through Friday during business hours for people who do not need to speak with a judge or prosecutor.
Downtown Austin Community Court: 505 Barton Springs Road, with walk-in dockets Monday through Friday in late morning and mid-afternoon time blocks.
Results from the prior year
Court data from the prior year’s amnesty effort indicate the program can reduce outstanding court inventory when participation is high. In the last amnesty program, 1,988 outstanding warrants were cleared, and 14,466 civil parking citations were terminated.
The current program is presented as a compliance-focused initiative—one that prioritizes clearing eligible municipal cases through supervised court processes rather than arrests when defendants voluntarily appear.
Residents who believe they may have an active municipal warrant or unresolved citation are encouraged to verify their status directly with the court and use the amnesty window to seek a resolution plan that matches their circumstances.
