Heat replaces late-winter chill across Central Texas

Austin is heading into a sharply warmer pattern after the region’s most recent freezing temperatures, with forecasts calling for near-record heat during the weekend of March 21–22. The shift caps a volatile early-spring stretch that has brought large temperature swings across Texas and much of the country.

The latest local forecast calls for mostly sunny conditions and a rapid climb from upper-70s midweek into the mid-90s by Saturday. Current projections put Austin’s high near 96°F on Saturday, March 21, followed by about 92°F on Sunday, March 22, before easing slightly early next week.

Record territory in a month known for extremes

While mid-90s heat is not unheard of in March, it is uncommon and can approach daily record levels. Long-term climate records for Austin show that late March has produced some of the city’s most anomalous early-season heat, including a March all-time high of 98°F recorded on March 28, 1971. With Saturday’s forecast near 96°F, the weekend could place Austin within a narrow margin of the city’s most intense March heat on record.

In addition to daytime highs, warm overnight lows can elevate heat stress by limiting nighttime cooling. Earlier this month, the Austin area recorded unusually warm minimum temperatures, a sign of persistent warmth that can compound the effects of daytime heat when it coincides with light winds and clear skies.

Why the weekend matters for public safety and infrastructure

Early-season heat can catch residents off guard, particularly after a cold snap. Health risk tends to rise when people resume outdoor activity without heat acclimatization. The risk is highest for older adults, young children, and people with chronic conditions, as well as for outdoor workers and anyone exerting themselves during peak afternoon temperatures.

  • Plan strenuous activities for morning hours when possible.
  • Monitor for signs of dehydration or heat illness during prolonged outdoor time.
  • Ensure access to shade, water, and cooled indoor spaces.

Forecast highs in the mid-90s in late March place Austin within range of rare early-season heat that can challenge daily records.

What to watch next

Forecasters will be monitoring whether Austin reaches or exceeds daily record highs at official climate sites and whether overnight lows stay elevated. A modest cooldown is possible after the weekend, but temperatures are expected to remain well above typical mid-March averages for several days.
