Austin cyclist Bobby Wayne Carr dies after South Congress Avenue hit-and-run; police seek information

Crash timeline and location

A cyclist died weeks after being struck by a vehicle that left the scene late last spring on South Congress Avenue, Austin police said.

Police reported that officers were called at 11:44 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, to the 4100 block of South Congress Avenue for a crash involving “a pedestrian on a bike” and an unknown vehicle. The driver left without stopping to provide aid or call 911.

The cyclist, identified by police as Bobby Wayne Carr, was transported to a local hospital after the crash. Police said Carr died on June 9, 2025, from injuries sustained in the collision.

Investigation status and how cases are classified

The case was assigned to the Austin Police Department’s Vehicular Homicide Unit. Police said the incident was being investigated as Austin’s 42nd fatal crash of 2025 and that the running total at that point in the year was 46 traffic deaths.

Police noted that the information released publicly reflected an initial assessment and that fatality figures can change as investigations proceed.

What police are asking the public to do

Police asked anyone with information about the driver or the vehicle involved to contact the Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477. Police said a reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information that leads to an arrest.

Why hit-and-run cases can be difficult to solve

When a driver leaves the scene, investigators often rely on a combination of witness accounts, surveillance video from nearby businesses or residences, vehicle debris, and damage patterns to identify the vehicle and the person behind the wheel. The passage of time can complicate those efforts, especially if potential video is overwritten or if a damaged vehicle is repaired before it is located.
