Austin Community College reports spring 2026 enrollment growth as free tuition and workforce programs expand

Spring start brings higher headcount and more full-time students
Austin Community College District (ACC) opened the spring 2026 semester on Tuesday, Jan. 20, with campuswide enrollment rising year over year. College figures released ahead of the term show spring registrations exceeding 39,000 students, described as a 7% increase compared with spring 2025. Internal enrollment updates during the January ramp-up period also put spring registrations above 40,000 students, indicating that counts can shift as late-start sessions continue to add students.
ACC’s academic calendar lists the spring semester running Jan. 20 through May 17, with multiple entry points for students through 14-week, 12-week and eight-week sessions. Registration remained open into the start of the term for several shortened formats, a structure commonly used by community colleges to accommodate working adults and students balancing family responsibilities.
Workforce-aligned fields lead gains
ACC reported that spring growth was concentrated in workforce and career pathways. The largest percentage increases were cited in Skilled Trades, Advanced Manufacturing and Health Sciences, each up about 17% compared with the prior spring. Liberal Arts (Humanities and Communications) also increased, reported at about 13%.
The spring update also highlighted continued momentum among returning students. Continuing-student enrollment was reported up 9% year over year and up 23% compared with two years ago, a measure often used by colleges to track near-term persistence.
- Spring 2026 semester dates: Jan. 20–May 17
- Reported spring enrollment: more than 39,000 students (7% year-over-year increase)
- Reported full-time enrollment: 11,319 students
- Fastest-growing areas: Skilled Trades, Advanced Manufacturing, Health Sciences
Affordability policies remain central to enrollment strategy
The college’s enrollment expansion follows the rollout and scaling of ACC’s Free Tuition Pilot Program, which began in fall 2024 and continued into its second year. ACC has described the program as serving more than 10,000 students and accounting for a substantial share of overall enrollment gains since 2023. Earlier college reporting on the pilot showed growth in recent high school graduates enrolling directly after graduation, with participation spanning multiple school districts in the service area.
In addition to free-tuition cohorts, ACC approved a reduction in out-of-state tuition and fees beginning spring 2026, lowering the published per-credit-hour rate from $335 to $218. The change was framed as aligning pricing more closely with peer institutions in Texas and could affect recruitment among students who do not meet Texas residency requirements.
Spring enrollment figures can fluctuate through the first weeks of classes as students add late-start courses, adjust schedules, or are removed for missed payment deadlines.
Capacity pressures and student supports
ACC’s recent enrollment increases have also required operational adjustments, including adding course sections and staffing to meet demand in high-enrollment disciplines. For spring, ACC emphasized student-facing supports such as advising, financial aid counseling, and course planning, alongside payment-plan options tied to registration deadlines. The college also used the first two days of the term as “calendar blackout” days to prioritize direct student assistance at the start of classes.
